Based on seven months of ethnographic fieldwork in Sillamäe and Daugavpils in 2019, conducted as part of a larger project on state-society relations among Russian-speaking communities in the Baltic States, this article follows Russian-speaking residents' efforts at joining the national Estonian or Latvian collectives primarily as fiscal subjects.
