MPhil in Japanese Studies

Students who successfully complete the MSc year, may progress to the second, MPhil year, during which they will do an advanced research methods course, a further language course, one more course about Japan (two in the case of those who do not take the language course), and a 30,000 word thesis to be handed in by 12 noon on Monday of the fourth week of Trinity Term.

The primary aim of the MPhil programme is to prepare students for subsequent doctoral work but it is also appropriate preparation for a wide range of careers.

The options available to MPhil students are the same as those listed on the MSc in Japanese Studies.

Changing your programme of study

MSc and First-year MPhil students considering transferring from the MSc to the MPhil programme or from the MPhil to the MSc programme must submit the "Application for Change of Programme of Study" by the end of week 4 of either Michaelmas or Hilary Term.  Students should make their decision to switch programmes in consultation with their supervisor.  Some students will be required to return home in the next holiday period following their application to apply for a new visa for the MPhil.
