New strategies of survival in Venezuela: migration, and alternative remittances

This project explores alternative remittance practices amongst Venezuelan migrants and refugees.

For those who remain in Venezuela, remittances are an essential means of survival but there are multiple barriers to sending remittances including legal status, bank account access, government interference, and hyperinflation.

This project analyses the innovative ways Venezuelans send remittances based on empirical research with diasporas in Buenos Aires and Panama City and other stakeholders. It focuses on 'in kind' remittances, use of black-market exchanges and using cryptocurrencies as remittances. The project is important for exploring how populations adapt in the face of mainstream economic failure.
