Dr Yosuke Buchmeier
Departmental Lecturer in Japanese Studies
Yosuke Buchmeier is Departmental Lecturer at the Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies and affiliated with St Antony's College. His research explores a wide range of topics in contemporary Japanese society, with particular attention to political economy, media/communication, and digitalization. He examines the role of public service broadcasting in democracy, the sustainability of public finance, and issues of intergenerational justice in aging societies, adopting a comparative perspective on Japan, Europe, and the United States. His work has appeared in Media, Culture & Society, Perspectives on Politics, Journalism Studies, and the Elgar Encyclopedia of Political Communication, among others.
Prior to joining the University of Oxford, Yosuke was a Research Associate at the Japan Center of LMU Munich. He has also been a Doctoral Fellow at the German Institute for Japanese Studies (DIJ Tokyo) and a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Tokyo (with Professor Kaori Hayashi at the Interfaculty Initiative of Information Studies). Before returning to academia, he worked in international business across Japan and East Asia, primarily in consulting and training for the automotive and technology sectors. He also co-founded and managed a Hong Kong-based tea business, sourcing Japanese tea from Uji/Kyoto.
