Guy Futi
DPhil in Area Studies (Africa)
Guy is a doctoral candidate in Area Studies (Africa) at St. Cross College, University of Oxford. Guy completed his Masters degree at Harvard University, Cambridge and his Bachelors degree at Concordia University, Quebec. His research lies on the intersection of social entrepreneurship, civil society and government. His current thesis is entitled "Social Entrepreneurship and its Impact on African Governance: A Lagos State Case Study". The project investigates what happens when social entrepreneurs decide to deliver public services and goods in sectors that are traditionally championed by governments and civil society.
A former social entrepreneur himself, Guy founded MAJI Water, a social enterprise dedicated to alleviating the world water crisis by building wells across Central America and Africa. Guy has worked for the Jumia Group (NYSE:JMIA), the first African internet company to list on the New York Stock exchange as a Managing Director in Nigeria driving ecommerce, on demand services and fintech initiatives. He consults for the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and advises start-ups as well as multinationals on doing business in Africa. Born in Gabon to parents from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guy speaks French, English and Lingala.
